1) Chinese New Year Celebration --- "Cultural Night 2007 "

 

Dear UCLA Friends and Colleagues,

 

Happy Chinese New Year!

 

2007 is the "Golden Pig Year" which only comes every 600 years according to Chinese Folklore. It symbolizes a successful, prosperous and wealthy life. As the largest international students and scholars association at UCLA, Chinese Students and Scholars Association at UCLA (CSSA-UCLA) is committed to promote cultural exchanges, introduce Chinese culture into America and build up friendship with people from all over the world. To celebrate our lives at UCLA and greet Chinese Lunar New Year, we are cordially inviting all students, scholars and faculty at UCLA and alumni to attend "2007 Chinese New Year Celebration--- Cultural Night", the biggest CSSA annual entertainment event open to the public (check Welcome Message at: http://cssa.ucla.edu/).

 

Our program includes, but not limited to, Lion Dance, Fashion Show, Magic Show, Kids Chorus, Xiang Sheng (Stand-up Comedy), Chinese Folk Dancing, Musical Instrument, Solo and Prize Drawing ( i.e., iPod Shuffle and miscellaneous items). Time: Pre-Show: 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2007 (FREE phototaking, Chinese calligraphy and paining demo, puzzles, video, light Chinese food and drink, and etc.)

 

Party: 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., Sunday, February 18, 2007.

2) SCBA career development town hall meeting

 

CAREER DEVELOPMENT TOWN HALL MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

 

As a service to provide career development guidance to the biomedical students and scientists, the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA, www.scba-society.org) and its BioPharm Division will host an interactive “town hall” meeting at the La Jolla campus of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in the afternoon of Saturday, February 17, 2007. The topics will center on proven parameters in successful Career Development in the academic world as well as the biotech and biopharm industries.

 

We are very fortunate to have the following four distinguished SCBA members to serve as Panel Speakers:

 

World Renowned Pioneer in Bioengineering- Professor Shu Chien (UCSD)

 

Leading Biotechnology Entrepreneur- Dr. Kenneth S. Fong (Kenson Ventures)

 

Senior Pharmaceutical Industry Executive- Dr. Henry Pan (Prometheus Lab)

 

Senior Pharmaceutical R&D Scientist- Dr. Chi-Ming Lee (AstraZeneca)

PANEL SPEAKERS:

 

Shu Chien, M.D., Ph.D.:

University Professor of Bioengineering and Medicine, Y.C. Fung Professor of Bioengineering, and Director of Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering, University of California, San Diego. He is a pioneering authority in the studies on how mechanical forces affect blood flow in the cardiovascular system and the effects on health and diseases. Professor Chien, a recipient of numerous world-class awards and honors, including the 2006 Life-time Achievement Award from the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA). He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a Member of Academia Sinica and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

 

Kenneth S. Fong, Ph.D.:

Dr. Fong (Ph.D., Molecular Biology & Microbiology, Indiana University, 1977) found Clontech Laboratories, Inc. in 1984 as a pioneer in the commercialization of innovative genetic tools to facilitate gene cloning and analysis. He built CLONTECH into one of the largest Molecular/Cell Biology companies in the US, with about 400 employees (65 Ph.D. scientists) before it was acquired by Becton-Dickinson in 1999. Shortly after the acquisition, Dr. Fong started the Venture firm, Kenson Ventures, LLC to invest and assist the development as well as the growth of more than 20 biotech companies in the areas of research products, diagnostics and pharmaceuticals. He is a leading entrepreneur-Venture investor in the biotechnology industry, community leader (Member of the Committee of 100 and Trustee of the California State University System) and philanthropist. Dr. Fong is the current President of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA).

 

Henry Pan, MD, PhD, FACC

Dr. Pan is currently the Executive Vice President, CSO & CMO of Prometheus Therapeutics and Diagnostics, a personalized medicine company in gastroenterology. Prior to joining Prometheus, he was the Executive Vice President & CMO at Neurocrine Biosciences; Managing Director of Vennworks, CEO of Vennworks RTP; President, CEO, Managing Partner, & co-founder of Pharmacologics LLC; President & CEO of MDS Pharmaceutical Services; Executive Vice President of R&D at DuPont Merck and Vice President & head of Clinical R&D at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton. Dr. Pan has been involved in >40 NDA's and has over 100 publications. He has served on the board of many companies, including the Chairman of the Board of EWPI, a nutri-pharmaceutical company. Dr. Pan is a fellow of 6 colleges. He is the current Chairman of the BioPharm Division of the SCBA. He has been honored on numerous occasions for his managerial acumen and his many contributions to science and the society.

 

Chi-Ming Lee, Ph.D.:

Dr. Lee is currently the Director of Translational Science for the CNS/Pain Control Research Area at AstraZeneca in Wilmington, Delaware. He is a neuroscientist who has spent over 20 years in drug discovery and development. He had created and led several multi-disciplinary project teams at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Abbott Laboratories, Bayer Corporation and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals to discover and validate novel molecule targets, generate appropriate animal models, identify drug candidates for diseases of the central nervous system (CNS), and deliver drug candidates to proof of principal studies in the clinic for Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis. He has extensive experience in developing global CNS discovery strategy, forming collaborative joint ventures, evaluating licensing opportunities and facilitating strategic alignment of the tasks and goals of the discovery and development functions. Dr. Lee is the current President of the BioPharm division of SCBA.

 

 

MODERATORS:

 

Hui Cai, Ph.D.:

Dr. Cai received her B.S. and M.S. from Beijing University, and Ph.D. from The Scripps Research Institute in 1999. She then joined Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development in San Diego, working on drug discovery programs targeting immune mediated inflammatory diseases. She is an author of nearly thirty scientific publications and co-inventor of eight issued or pending patents. Dr. Cai is a commissioner at City of San Diego Science & Technology Commission, an advisory board for the San Diego Mayor and City Council. She also serves as a board member of SDCA, SABPA, and, American Chemical Society San Diego Section. Dr. Cai is completing her executive MBA at the Rady School of Management of UC San Diego as a DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary - Athena FlexMBA Scholar.

 

Chi Chung Lin, Ph.D.:

Dr. Lin (Ph.D. Biochemistry, Indiana University, 1978) worked for 15 years at the hydrocolloids (microbial and seaweed polysaccharides) industry: then Kelco Division of Merck & Company as senior R&D scientist as well as manager of China operations. He made significant contributions to the screening, discovery, application development and commercialization of many novel microbial polysaccharide products as well as in the industrial production processes development and improvement during the period of rapid growth of the Kelco business. He became an independent hydrocolloid biotechnology consultant when Merck sold Kelco to concentrate on its core pharmaceutical business at the end of 1994. He continues to make contributions to the growth of the hydrocolloid market and business in his current role as an industrial consultant. Dr. Lin also serves as Visiting Professor of Biotechnology at the Jiang Nam University, Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. He is a Professional Member of the Institute of Food Technologists.
