hiking to the Sandstone Peak (Malibu) this Sunday

Event: hiking to the Sandstone Peak

Place: Sandstone Peak, Malibu

Details:

Sandstone Peak is the highest point (3111 feet or 1km) in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. It provides spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and inland valleys. On a clear day, you can even see Catalina Island and the Channel Islands. More information about the ranch can be found at http://www.nps.gov/samo. After the hiking, we will go to the Malibu Lagoon State beach

(http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=835to play volleyball and frisbee. The state beach features 22 acres of wetlands, flower gardens and sandy beach, and is home to a variety of bird species.

 

The trip plan is below. We will depart from 2671 Magnolia Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90007 at 9:30am. The direction from USC to the Sandstone Peak is to follow 10 West for 11 miles, and then 1 Pacific Highway North for about 25 miles. After that, turn right to Yerba Buena Road. After about 6 miles, you will see a Ranger Station on your right. Continue for about half a mile, you will see a parking lot on your left, which is the trailhead for Sandstone Peak). We will gather at this parking lot by 11:00am. A detailed map around Sandstone Peak / Circle X ranch can be found at http://www.nps.gov/samo/maps/cx.htm . Have lunch on the trail. The hiking takes about 3 to 4 hours. After that we will go to Malibu Lagoon State beach. The driving direction is go back along Yerba Buena Road, turn left into 1 Pacific Highway South for about 12 mile. After passing the intersection with Malibu Canyon Road, continue on 1 Pacific Highway for about a mile, and you will see the intersection with Cross Creek Road. The park entrance is to the right of the intersection. Youcan park your car in the local street for free, or inside the park for $5 per car. We will return home around 5:00pm.
