Event: Hiking in Orange County
Time: Sunday, Sep 5th
Place: Aliso-Wood Canyons Park, and Dana Point Harbor, 60 miles south of USC
Details:
For the upcoming labor day long weekend, the hiking club will organize a
hiking trip to the Aliso-Wood Canyons Park and the Dana Point Harbor in
Orange County this Sunday, Sep 5th.
Aliso-Wood Canyons Park (http://www.ocparks.com/alisoandwoodcanyons/is
located in the beautiful Laguna Niguel city, with 4,000 acres of wilderness
and natural open space land. Just 2 miles from the Pacific ocean, the park
is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals, together with mature
oaks, sycamores, and elderberry trees. After the hiking, we will also visit
the nearby Dana Point Harbor (http://www.danapointharbor.com/), which is one
of the most spectacular man-made harbors on the west coast. The harbor is
named after Richard Henry Dana, who described the steep cliff cove of the
harbor as "the only romantic spot in California" in his renowned book, "Two
Years Before The Mast", in the 1830's.
Our tentative plan is below. We will first gather at 2671 Magnolia Ave (Los
Angeles, CA90007) by 9:30am, and then go to the Aliso-Wood Canyons Park. The
driving direction is to take I-10 east for 3.6 miles, continue on I-60 east
for 0.6 mile, take I-5 South for about 47 miles, turn right into Alicia
Parkway and go south for 5 miles. The park entrance is on the right of the
road, about 300 meters south of the intersection between Alicia Parkway and
Aliso Creek Road. We will meet at the parking lot by10:45am.
We will hike inside the park for about 3 hours, and then go to the Dana
Point Harbor around 2:00pm. The driving direction is to go south along
Alicia Parkway for 1 mile, turn right into Crown Valley Parkway for 3 miles,
turn left into CA-1 SOUTH for 2.5 miles, turn right into Golden Lantern
Street for 0.3 mile. Passing the intersection with Dana Point Harbor Drive,
you can park your car in the Mariner's Village Main parking lot or other
nearby public parking lot, free for 4 hours.
We will meet on the park island where there are picnic shelters on wide
grassy areas (from the Mariner's Village Main parking lot, go west along
Dana Point Harbor Drive for about 0.2 miles, then go south along Island Way
for 0.2 miles). We will then play volleyball and enjoy the beautiful scenery
there. The returning time is around 5:30pm. Direction is to go east along
Dana Point Harbor Drive for 0.2 miles, continue on Del Obispo Street for 0.8
miles, turn right into Stonehill Drive for 0.6 mile, take I-5 North for 53
miles, then I-10 West for 3.6 miles.
If you are interested in the trip, please email xhe@usc.edu for reservation.
Please let me know if you need carpool or can provide carpool seats for
other people. Carpool cost will be shared among participants (about $5 per
person, to the driver directly). Please also bring enough drinking water and
a light lunch with you. If you have any question, you can call me at
213-741-0858. BTW, the photos for the trip to Topanga State Park are now
available at the hiking club web site at
