Event: Cherry Picking this Saturday (June 5)

Time: Saturday (June 5)

Place: Leona Valley, about 80 miles north of Los Angeles

Web site: http://www.cherriesupic.com

Plan: We will depart from 2671 Magnolia Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90007, at

9:00am. The driving direction from USC to Leona Valley is below: take 110

North for 4 miles, then 5 North for 24 miles, after that, go along CA-14

North for 35 miles, take the Palmdale Blvd exit towards Palmdale, turn Left

on W Palmdale Blvd for 1 mile, continue on Elizabeth Lake RD for 9 miles. We

will meet at the northeast corner of the intersection between 90th street

and Elizabeth Lake RD by 11:00am, and then decide which orchard we will go

next (there are about 30 orchards in the nearby area).

After the cherry picking around 2:30pm, we will return along a more scenic

route that traverses through Elizabeth Lake, Hughes Lake, and Castaic Lake

(one of the largest reservoirs in Southern California with 29 miles of

shoreline). We may visit the Castaic Lake state recreational area

(http://www.castaiclake.com/based on participants' opinion.

For reservation: Please send me an email at xhe@usc.edu. In the email,

please include your phone number, and whether you need carpool or can

provide carpool seats for other people. Cost for carpool will be shared

among participants (around $6 per person). The cost for picking cherry

varies depending on the orchard. Typically it is free to eat inside the

orchard, and you only pay for the cherry you bring out (around $1.5 per

pound). If you have any question, please feel free to contact me at

213-741-0858 or email me.

BTW, this Thursday admission is free for the Huntington Library

(http://www.huntington.org/). It has the best gardens in Southern

California, and the normal ticket price is $8.5 for students except the

first Thursday of each month. The opening hour is 12:00pm to 4:30pm. It

would be a nice place to enjoy the beautiful sunshine in the summer.
